TIMING · PLAIN ANSWERS
Is it better to stretch in the morning or at night?
There is no single best time: Mayo Clinic says you can stretch anytime, anywhere, and that the benefit comes from stretching regularly, at least two to three times a week. What matters more than the clock is that your muscles are warm and the stretch stays gentle, so first thing in the morning, move around for a few minutes before you stretch. If you sit at a desk, the hours in between matter too: workplace guidance recommends a short break from the workstation every hour, which neither a morning nor a bedtime routine covers.

Pick the time you will keep
A few minutes after waking can be a way to start the day; a few minutes in the evening can be a way to close it. Either works. Mayo Clinic’s point is regularity: even five to ten minutes at a time can help, and if you stop stretching, any range of motion you gained can fade again. The time you can repeat is the right one.
If you stretch soon after waking
Mayo Clinic advises against treating stretching as a warm-up, because stretching cold muscles can hurt. It suggests five to ten minutes of light walking or similar easy movement first, or stretching after activity, when muscles are warm. In the morning that can be as simple as walking around the house for a few minutes before a gentle stretch. You should feel tension, not pain.
The part of the day a desk worker misses
Morning and evening routines both leave the working day untouched. CCOHS recommends five to ten minutes away from the workstation for every hour, and the NHS advises breaking up long periods of not moving. Pause covers that stretch of the day: optional reminders every 45, 60 or 90 minutes, only within the working hours and days you choose, and short routines for when they arrive.
Common questions
Is it good to stretch as soon as I wake up?
A gentle stretch is fine, but start with a few minutes of easy movement such as walking around. Mayo Clinic warns that stretching cold muscles can hurt.
Is stretching before bed a good idea?
It can be, as long as it stays gentle. There is no need to push into a deep stretch at the end of the day; feel tension, not pain.
Does Pause remind me in the morning or the evening?
Only within the working hours and days you set, which start as nine to five, Monday to Friday. Reminders are off until you turn them on, and you can open a routine yourself at any time.
