RHYTHM · PLAIN ANSWERS
Is stretching 3 times a week enough?
For flexibility, yes: Mayo Clinic says you get the most benefit by stretching regularly, at least two to three times a week, and that even five to ten minutes at a time can help. If your goal is to break up long hours of sitting, though, three times a week is the wrong measure. Workplace guidance counts breaks per hour, not sessions per week: CCOHS recommends five to ten minutes away from the workstation for every hour, and the NHS advises breaking up long periods of not moving.

Two goals, two rhythms
A flexibility routine and a movement break answer different questions. The first is a few dedicated sessions a week. The second is short, frequent changes of position through the working day. Three good sessions a week do not interrupt a day of sitting, and hourly breaks are not meant to replace a fuller routine. Many people do both.
What three sessions a week can look like
Mayo Clinic suggests focusing on major muscle groups such as the calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders, stretching both sides, holding each stretch for about 30 seconds and not bouncing. Five to ten minutes is enough to count. Keep going: if you stop, any range of motion you gained can fade again.
What a workday rhythm can look like
A few gentle stretches or a short walk, once an hour or so, inside working hours. Pause is built for that rhythm: optional reminders every 45, 60 or 90 minutes within the hours and days you choose, and three short routines, including one you can do without leaving your chair.
Common questions
Can you stretch too much?
The warnings in mainstream guidance are about how hard you stretch rather than how often. You should feel tension, not pain; if it hurts, ease off, and stop for pain or severe discomfort.
Is it OK to stretch every day?
Mayo Clinic’s two to three times a week is a minimum, not a limit. Gentle stretch breaks during the working day are exactly what CCOHS describes.
Do three sessions a week make up for sitting all day?
Not on their own. Guidance on sitting is about breaking it up during the day, which a few sessions a week cannot do.
