RHYTHM · PLAIN ANSWERS
How often should you stretch at work?
Occupational health bodies favour short, frequent breaks rather than one long one: CCOHS suggests five to ten minutes away from the workstation for every hour, and the UK’s HSE gives five to ten minutes after fifty to sixty minutes of continuous screen work as an example. A brief stretch or walk once an hour is therefore a practical starting rhythm. The right frequency depends on your work and your body, and this is general guidance, not a prescription.

Frequent and short beats rare and long
The consistent thread in workplace guidance is to interrupt long stretches of sitting or screen work often. A three-minute break every hour interrupts the day eight times; one thirty-minute session after work interrupts it once. The rhythm matters more than the total.
What the evidence does and does not say
Guidance from occupational health organisations recommends breaks. Randomised evidence that break programmes prevent musculoskeletal symptoms in healthy workers is, according to a 2025 Cochrane review, very uncertain. Pause is honest about this: breaks are evidence-informed, not clinically proven, and Pause’s own routines have not been clinically validated.
Making an hourly rhythm actually happen
Tie the break to something that already happens, such as the end of a meeting, or let a reminder carry the timing. Pause offers a 45, 60 or 90-minute interval inside your working hours, with the first reminder one interval after you start, and no reminders outside those hours.
Common questions
How long should each stretch break be?
Long enough for one comfortable movement and a slow release. Pause’s routines run around three minutes, with the option of a longer walk afterwards.
Is hourly too often?
Guidance from CCOHS and HSE treats roughly hourly breaks as reasonable for screen work. If hourly feels like too much, a 90-minute interval is still a regular rhythm.
Should I stretch instead of walking?
Guidance generally favours standing and walking when you can. Pause includes an easy walk as a break option alongside stretches.
